Those of you who’ve followed my Instagram for the last few months have probably noticed that, for the first time in my life, I’m exercising regularly and making an effort to eat right.
Yes, you heard me correctly: for the first time in my life.
And for someone who enjoys snacks as much as I do, it’s hard! My favorite snack is Smartfood White Cheddar Cheese Popcorn. I can eat a whole bag of that in one sitting while reading a book (and I have).
And I know I look grump a.f. in half these photos, but I really, really love it.
That’s not to say weightlifting and watching what I eat isn’t without its challenges. On a day when I was sick and hadn’t eaten anything, Dexter stopped by Burger Supreme on his way home from work — I ate an entire cheeseburger and a grilled cheese sandwich.
And then there were the two or three weeks where I couldn’t increase my bench press weight no matter how hard I tried — and I actually ended up going down, which was a major blow to my self-esteem.
But overall, it’s been great. I love watching my
meatsuit body get stronger, and I’m starting to feel like the person I want to be.
And — I’m learning to cook actual meals, which is a first for me. I mean, I can make rice and pasta and soup, if the soup is from a mix and the pasta sauce is from a jar. Dexter usually does the cooking, but he’s laid-up with a bad bout of mono. And rather than stop at McDonald’s or Beto’s every night, I’m figuring out how to cook — how to remember what’s in my kitchen and how to put it together in good ways.
And all this while following my high-veg, high-protein, low-carb diet. (I’m not sciences enough to call it keto, but that’s more or less what I’m trying to do.)
Guys, I’m really proud of myself. It’s hard and I’m doing it.
Oh, and the #ambyactive hashtag comes from my Instagram, where I post gym selfies and abuse Insta stories so I can throw shade and/or compliments at other gym rats.
